BOISE, Idaho — St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral is celebrating 160 years by hosting an open house Wednesday afternoon.
Located on the corner of 8th Street and State Street, the Cathedral is a long-standing cornerstone of Boise architecture. The church announced Wednesday that they are hosting a celebration for the accomplishment of 160 years.
Though celebrations have been taking place since early summer, St. Michael's is hosting an open house at their first church, Christ Chapel.
Christ Chapel, located next to Albertson's Stadium, was built in 1866 and remains open today, thanks to the Christ Chapel Historical Society, St. Michael's stated in a news release.
The open house takes place Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 4-7 p.m.
"For over 160 years, we have been baptizing, marrying and burying God's people, and tending to their spiritual needs in between with care and compassion," said The Very Rev. Sean Wall of St. Michael's. "Generations of Idahoans have been touched by the work of our forebears. As we plan to build on their legacy for the next 160 years, we are privileged to recognize their tremendous contributions to our community," added Father Wall.
The long-standing church has history in two of Boise's most influential organizations - Boise State University and St. Luke's Health System. Boise State University was once Boise Junior College, and before that it was St. Margaret's School - opened in 1892 by St. Michael's.
St Luke's was started by the church as well, but just like Boise State, the organizations separated many years ago.
"We are honored to celebrate alongside St. Michael's as they reflect on 160 years of service. As the organization behind many impressionable beginnings in our community, including St. Luke's in 1902, St. Michaels continues to be a pillar in our community," said Beth Toal, vice president of communications and marketing for St. Luke's Health System.
