MOSCOW, Idaho — The University of Idaho was ranked #2 for America's safest universities by academic data analytic group, Academic Influence (AI). Brigham Young University campus in Rexburg, Idaho also made the list, coming in at No. 3.
According to AI, University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho achieved such an admirable ranking due to its lower-than-average property and violent crime rates, among other considered metrics such as campus security features and mental health services.
The University of Idaho-Moscow crime rate per 1,000 students was 1.93, with a student population of 11,849, according to AI data. Brigham Young University-Idaho crime rate per 1,000 students was 2.09, with a student population of 23,318.
Both UI and BYU-Idaho adhere to the Clery Act, which is a federal reporting system for universities to document campus crime and security statistics.
Rounding out the top five safest college campuses in America are:
- Purdue University
- University of Idaho-Moscow
- Brigham Young University-Idaho
- Bridgewater State University
- University of Massachusetts
The site credited the campus security team, Moscow police, Moscow Fire Department, paramedics, facilities department and University of Idaho building services, for the campus's safety stats.
Academic Influence is an organization that analyzes nationwide academic ranking and statistics. According to Academic Influence's mission statement, it is "a team of academics and data scientists working to provide an objective, non-gameable, influence-based ranking for the people, schools, and disciplinary programs that make up higher education. Our aim is to identify and foster what’s best in higher education."
