Sheriff seeking identity of Ted Bundy's Idaho victim known as 'Snake River Jane Doe'

In 1989, before his execution, Bundy confessed to murdering a Boise hitchhiker, but details about who she was are limited.

BOISE, Idaho — According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office (ACSO), Ted Bundy abducted a young female hitchhiker off Interstate 84 on the outskirts of Boise on Sept. 2, 1974.

Her identity remains a mystery to this day, 50 years later.

ACSO announced on Friday, Nov. 1, that it is seeking the public's help in identifying this young woman.

In 1989, Idaho investigators questioned Bundy before his execution. During the interview, Bundy said that the girl appeared to be a runaway, making her way to Montana. Bundy believed the girl was running away from the Boise area.

The girl was described by Bundy as being roughly 16 to 18 years old, white, about 5 foot 6 inches with light brown hair. She had with her a green backpack and was wearing simple beaded necklace. Bundy said he possibly picked her up near the Eisenmann exit in Boise.

ACSO said Bundy later murdered her and disposed of her body in an unknown location.

Her remains have never been found, and her identity is unknown. However - the public may be able to help.

"I would love to know more about what you remember and what you have to say," said ACSO Cold Case Investigator Tim Cooper. "I think this is one of those cases where we're fifty years down the road, where the public is going to be a big part in solving this."

If you remember someone who went missing around September 1974, or if anything in this description rings any bells, please contact ACSO at 208-577-3102 or lmontague@adacounty.id.gov.
