The Salmon-Challis National Forest proposing fee and service changes

Proposed changes may come to Salmon-Challis National Forest. The daily use fee will be changing from $4 a day, to $3 a day.

LEMHI, Idaho — The Salmon-Challis National Forest is proposing to reduce their fees at the Salmon and Middle Fork of the Salmon Rivers. The special recreation permit would be charging float boaters $3 rather than the original price for $4.

The reasoning behind the proposed decrease in fees is to also reduce services in the surrounding the area. A service such as the Newland Ranch Human Waste Disposal Site will is proposed to close down.

Josh Milligan The Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Salmon-Challis National Forest states:

"The fee reduction will allow the Salmon-Challis National Forest to spend recreation fees collected on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and Salmon River responsibly. For example, allowing continued improvements to the Salmon River Road and Boundary Creek Road conditions instead of spending a significant portion of the fees collected on the Human Waste Disposal System at Newland Ranch, which has not properly functioned for several years"

Reducing the fees and closing down the disposal site means more money will be going towards the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and Salmon River. The Salmon River Road and Boundary Creek Road will continue to be improved.

The fee changes will be reviewed by a citizen's advisory committee, and the public is invited to comment on proposed decisions before September 20th.  To comment, you may contact Recreation Program Manager Nick Schade at the Salmon-Challis National Forest during normal business hours by calling 208-756-5115.
