IDAHO, USA — For many, the sight of a postal van brings excitement - carrying a long-anticipated delivery. Postal workers deliver our needs, wants and information. So, what the "Letter Carriers Stamp out Hunger Food Drive" does is a reversal, workers picking up others needs.
On Saturday, postal workers received deliveries filled with food to distribute across Idaho as part of their nationwide food drive.
This year marked the 32nd annual Stamp Out Hunger, which is the largest single-day food drive in the nation.
The Treasure Valley's postal worked added an extra stop on the routes, swapping out packages and postcards for boxes of donated food.
"They want to help, they want to give back," Jane Mclaughlin, volunteer program manager for The Idaho Foodbank said. "They see the neighborhoods, they see the need. They also see the appreciation of people that are giving food to us."
The Idaho Foodbank set up five locations across Boise where postal workers dropped off the donated food, which community members left in front of their mailboxes Saturday morning.
The Boise food drive aimed to bring in 50,000 pounds of food, which was then sifted and sorted by volunteers and given to The Idaho Foodbank - who share the donations with their food distribution partners across the state.
"They can be anywhere from the Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, church pantry, school pantries," Mclaughlin said. "They will be receiving this food and can give it out to the people that need it."
