Toddler shot with flare gun remains in critical condition

MERIDIAN -- The family of a 2-year-old who was seriously injured when he was shot in the head with a flare gun last week say the boy is improving, but still in critical condition. The child was shot by his 4-year-old brother as the two played in the backyard of a Meridian home.

Police believe the older child got the flare gun out of a boat that is stored in the backyard. Although the projectile did not ignite, a metal component lodged in the toddler's skull.

The child's family released a statement Wednesday thanking police for their quick response and asking the community for help.

The statement is below:

Lincoln's family would like to thank the community for their prayers, positive thoughts and encouragement during a most difficult dark time. He is an amazing strong beautiful boy that is loved by his siblings, parents and extended family. Lincoln is making better than anticipated progress, yet remains in critical condition, he has a long road of recovery from this horrible accident. There is a lot of unknowns that travel with a family dealing with a critical injury to a child.

The family is grateful for the quick response of the Meridian Police department, and their continued efforts of support. The family is thankful for the support of KTVB and look forward to follow up stories in the future when Lincoln stronger and in better health.

There are and will be financial issues that this young family needs help. This tight knit family is taking a bold brave step in asking the community for help, while honoring the need for privacy.
