Traveling through BOI this holiday season? Here's some tips

With an estimated 165,000 folks traveling through the Boise Airport during the holidays, it's important to stay informed on airport operations.

BOISE, Idaho — Thanksgiving has traditionally been one of the busiest travel periods of every year. 2024 is shaping up to break records, with nearly 165,000 passengers expected to go through the Boise Airport (BOI) airport during the Thanksgiving period.

According to the Boise Airport, the 10 days surrounding Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 21 through Dec. 1, will be busy at BOI.

If you are planning on flying this holiday season, check out these tips provided by BOI:

The airport will be busy:

  • Projections are estimating that the busiest travel days will be Tuesday, Nov. 26 and Wednesday, Nov. 27 prior to the holiday, and Sunday, Dec. 1 after the holiday. Projections believe that 5-7 a.m. and 10 a.m. to noon will be the busiest times to travel.

Cell phone waiting lot has moved:

  • The cell phone lot has moved, after a larger lot with dedicated parking opened earlier this year. It's about a 5- to 7-minute drive from the terminal, Boise Airport said. The new cell phone lot i s adjacent to the Economy Lot, and is three times larger than the previous cell phone lot.

Plan for parking:

BOI provided some tips for how to navigate parking at the airport. Parking may hit capacity during this travel period, so come prepared.

Arrive two hours early:

It's usually recommended for all airline travel, but arriving two hours early can help get you to your gate on time. Normally at BOI, travelers can get through security relatively quickly, but the holiday season can impact that. Remember to plan for parking and other travels in your two-hour arrival plan.

Know what you can pack:

TSA-approved foods can be permitted through airport security, but it's important to check what is eligible. Commonly confiscated items at TSA checkpoints include jams and jellies, cranberry sauce, gravy, bottles of wine and other Thanksgiving treats, said BOI. Knives and firearms are not permitted and should be left at home.
