Micron's first-ever tribal 'Girls Going Tech' event

The Micron Foundation hosted girls from the Sho-Pai tribe to celebrate Women's History Month and promote women in STEM-related career fields.

BOISE, Idaho — March is Women's History Month. To honor tribal women in Idaho, Micron hosted a K-12 STEM education event for tribal girls at the Discovery Center of Idaho Tuesday.

The Micron Foundation's "Girls Going Tech" event hosted 7th and 8th grade girls of the Sho-Pai tribe from the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, in an attempt to encourage young Idaho women to explore STEM-related career fields. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Kami Faylor with the Micron Foundation said the event is a way for girls to learn about tech careers and what's accessible to them.

"They can be anything in this world, they can be in some of the careers they're going to learn about today from both Micron women and other women from other companies that we're bringing in," Faylor said. "There are different pathways to entering some of those careers."

Micron expressed that the company values diversity and seeks to extend opportunities within the tech industry to students from all backgrounds.

According to a news release from Micron, many of its K-12 STEM education programs are intended to train and inspire people in underrepresented and rural populations in their pursuit of a STEM career.

"What we really want to do is broaden the horizon of students. Let them know, these girls know, that these careers in tech... anything in that vein...that they're accessible to them," Faylor added. "And that we really value having diversity of thought and having students from all different backgrounds pursue those careers."

The event featured activities such as an interactive chemistry set, a scavenger hunt, virtual reality room and a tour of the Discovery Center.
