One-way U-Haul customers arriving in Idaho fell nearly 6% from 2022, but departures fell more than 7% as overall moving traffic slowed.

IDAHO, USA — Idaho was ranked No. 6 for growth in the U.S. by the U-Haul Growth Index, rising four spots from its previous ranking in 2022.

U-Haul data analyzing migration patterns across the U.S. found that one-way U-Haul customers arriving in Idaho dropped by nearly 6% and departures decreased by more than 7% as overall moving traffic slowed down in 2023.

Despite the decline in moving traffic, U-Haul movers arriving in Idaho accounted for 51.3%, whereas people using U-Haul when leaving the state accounted for 48.7%, keeping Idaho in the Top 10 states for growth for the third consecutive year.

"Idaho is a great place to start a career," stated Seth McIntier, U-Haul Company of Idaho president. "When people decide to move, it's often because of the job and housing markets. We have both – jobs and affordable homes. Since so many young people are moving to Idaho, there is a strong entrepreneurial spirit here."

Boise and Nampa saw the greatest increase. U-Haul concluded that Twin Falls, Coeur d'Alene, Kuna, Post Falls, Meridian, Blackfoot, Mountain Home and Lewiston also reflected notable net gain.

"Idaho, especially Boise, offers a great job market," McIntier said. Adding that high employment rates at Albertsons stores, as well as within the St. Luke's Health System, contributed to the expansion.

While Texas, Florida and North Carolina took the lead for growth rate, California came in last place, ranked 50th, for the fourth year in a row.

The U-Haul Growth Index compiles data from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul customer transactions across the U.S. and Canada. The index analyzes the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks, trailers and U-Box moving containers arriving in a city or state, versus departing from that city or state.
