BOISE, Idaho — Chip sealing occurs in Ada County from early June to late August. The Ada County Highway District (ACHD) is seeing more vehicles getting towed in 2024, but the agency said it was expected to happen.
ACHD Maintenance Manager Lloyd Carnegie said 80-90 vehicles are typically towed during the chip sealing season. More than 150 vehicles have already been towed this year.
However, Carnegie said cars aren't necessarily being "towed," but rather getting moved to a cross street nearly.
“Residents shouldn't have to go very far if their vehicle was towed,” Carnegie said.
The Ada County Highway District started working only on the north and south streets simultaneously, leaving the east and west streets open and vice versa.
Carnegie said that helps, especially in the North End, where almost all residents have to park on the street instead of in garages or driveways. If a car does get towed, there is no extra cost to the owner.
“There is no impounding of the vehicles,” Carnegie said. “They're just parked on the street.”
To notify residents of where to not park, ACHD sends out mailers to impacted residents at the beginning of the season, hangs door flyers on cars 24-48 hours before the work begins and puts up no-parking signs.
ACHD's website also includes an interactive map where residents can see where work has been done, where work is underway and where it will happen in the future.
The highway district said to be patient as crews improve roadways and the driving experience for all Ada County residents.
