US 20 renamed Medal of Honor Highway

Idaho has joined a growing list of states honoring Medal of Honor recipients.

CALDWELL, Idaho — Idaho is joining the list of states dedicating its portion of the nation's longest roadway to Medal of Honor recipients.

U.S. 20, which runs across southern Idaho, is now known as a Medal of Honor Highway.

Legislatures in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming all passed bills this year to rename their portion of America's longest roadway.

Oregon passed a similar bill last year.

At Monday's ceremony in Caldwell, state Senator and bill co-sponsor, Abby Lee, talked about the message behind this movement.

“As we think about this highway, and we think about these signs, it's more than a sign," said Sen. Lee. "I hope that this sign will be a remembrance. An opportunity for us to stop and think about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. And maybe families will look up and say, 'What is a Medal of Honor?' And what does it take to be the 'bravest of the brave?'

The goal is to have the Medal of Honor Highway stretch more than 3,000 miles from Newport, Oregon to Boston, Massachusetts.

Several other states need to hop on board for that to happen.

Currently, there are 48 Medal of Honor recipients with ties to the Gem State.
