2 in custody after Vallivue Middle student brings BB gun to school

An 8th-grader and a 6th-grader are in custody.

CALDWELL -- Two boys are in custody after authorities say a they brought a BB gun to Vallivue Middle School Thursday morning, sparking a lockdown.

According to the Canyon County Sheriff's Office, the school was placed on lockdown after another student reported seeing the gun on the school bus. The principal immediately alerted the sheriff's office, who responded to the school along with Caldwell Police.

No one at Vallivue Middle was hurt, according to dispatchers. Officers found the BB gun, and determined there was no immediate threat to the school.

An 8th-grader and a 6th-grader are in custody for their role in the incident. The lockdown was lifted at 9:20 a.m., and the school day will continue as normal.

According to Vallivue School DIstrict spokesman Joseph Palmer, one of the boys brought the BB gun onto the bus, then handed it off to another boy who put it in his backpack and brought it inside the school.

Neither student had made any threats towards the school, he said.

"No threat was made," Palmer said. "A BB gun was brought to the school, but without a threat accompanying it."

Sheriff Kieran Donahue praised the child who alerted staff about seeing the gun.

“I want to commend the student who came forward and notified the principal of a potential gun on campus,” Donahue said. “This underscores the importance of instructing our kids that when you see something, say something, so that appropriate steps can be taken for the safety of all involved.”

It's unclear whether the two boys will face any criminal charges. Because they are underage, their names have not been released.
