Hateful graffiti pops up in Eagle weeks after city's decision to become a non-sanctuary city

The incident comes weeks after the city's decision to become a non-sanctuary city. Mayor Pike said he does not know if the vandalism is tied to the resolution.

EAGLE, Idaho — Tuesday morning, Eagle residents woke up to Vandalism along Floating Feather Road. The graffiti said, "Californians sucks" and "Eagle hates Mexicans."

"I was thoroughly disgusted and appalled that we have to deal with this kind of profiling within our own community because we are a very loyal and loving community," Eagle Mayor Brad Pike told KTVB Tuesday.

The incident follows the city's decision to pass resolution 24-07 to declare the City of Eagle a non-sanctuary city. Comments on social media soon after the decision were mixed with support and disappointment.

The mayor told KTVB he does not know if the vandalism is tied to the resolution.

"You're always going to have controversy on both sides of the coin on anything that gets passed," he told KTVB Tuesday afternoon. "But I'm not going to speculate on if this is something that I think is correlated to resolution 24-07."

He said the resolution is a statement, not a city or ordinance.

"I want to stress the fact this all about illegal activities and programs," Pike said. "This is not about the hard-working people that are here... migrants as a whole that are properly and going through the proper channels. If you're here illegally from any race, creed, or nationality we want it done the right way."

He added Vandalism is on the rise for the area, but that an incident like this is "out of the norm" for Eagle.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office told KTVB it is investigating the incident but has no leads. The office couldn't say whether one person or a group tagged the fences.

Dana Biberston, a spokesperson for the City of Eagle, said at 3 p.m. on Tuesday all the graffiti "[has] been removed with efforts from the property owner, an HOA, and the City Public Works Department."
