BOISE, Idaho — When spring comes around a large amount of baby animals are born, and the public has the opportunity to welcome a baby barn owl at the World Center for Birds of Prey(WCBP).
On Tuesday, WCBP announced they welcomed Salix, a three-week-old barn owl, to the Avian Ambassador team last week. The public will be able to visit Salix from April 30 until May 19. WCBP states exposing the baby raptor to people early in life will allow it to become more comfortable around a large crowd.
"We're so excited to welcome Salix to the team," World Center for Birds of Prey Director Tate Mason said. "Avian Ambassadors are crucial to educating the public about raptor conservation. When people meet a raptor up close and personal, it really opens their eyes to the magnificence of these birds."
Jessica Schlarbaum with WCBP said after May 19, Salix will begin its training to become an Avian Ambassador.
WCBP states that there are 22 raptors in the Avian Ambassador Team who participate in student programs, such as the annual Falls Flights program, which educates the public about raptors.
The name Salix was chosen due to the willow trees where barn owls usually roost, WCBP states.
The World Center for Birds of Prey is one of the education branches of The Peregrine Fund, an international conservation organization that works to conserve birds of prey worldwide.
WCBP is participating in Idaho Gives 2024, for further information, visit its social media post below.
