West Valley Medical Center closing Labor and Delivery unit, NICU

The hospital said the decision to close the units came after the number of births at the facility declined in recent years.

BOISE, Idaho — One Treasure Valley hospital said it will no longer provide birth services at its facility in Caldwell, due to lack of demand.

A spokesperson for West Valley Medical Center (WVMC) told KTVB that the hospital's Labor and Delivery unit, as well as the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), will be closing on April 1.

"We are constantly evaluating the healthcare needs of our community and we make adjustments to ensure we are meeting those needs," a WVMC spokesperson said in a statement to KTVB.

The hospital said it had seen a decline in the number of births at the facility over the last few years, which impacted the decision to close the units.

Existing patients will get an update from their medical providers.

The hospital said it hopes to keep as many staff from the closed units as possible, offering them jobs in other areas.

"We continue to expand and enhance other services at the hospital and remain committed to serving patients and communities in the Treasure Valley," the statement said.
