Workers escape after equipment catches fire at Simplot headquarters

"It could have been pretty perilous, considering how far of a fall that was."

BOISE -- A pair of construction workers made it to safety after a piece of equipmen tthey were working in caught fire Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 2:03 p.m. Monday at the Simplot headquarters building in downtown Boise, located next to JUMP on Myrtle Street.

Jason Lewis with Boise Fire said the two men were on a large man-lift six floors up when a welding blanket caught fire in the basket of the lift.

Leewis said the men "had a lot of flames around them," and were too far from the building to jump from the man-lift to a sixth-floor parapet.

"It was a long ways for them to be able to make it over to the side of the building to jump off, so workers on the ground level were able to swing the boom over so it was closer for them to jump from the lift to the sixth floor," he said.

A video shared with KTVB by viewer Jeff Syddall shows two men climbing to safety from the flaming basket.

Both workers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor burns. They were taken to a local hospital, but are expected to be OK.

Damage to the outside of the Simplot headquarters was minimal, Lewis said. He said the construction crews expressed relief that the welders in the basket were able to escape harm.

"They're just very glad that nobody did get hurt," he said. "It could have been pretty perilous, considering how far of a fall that was."

The fire remains under investigation.
