BOISE - A special groundbreaking of Zoo Boise's newest attraction took place this morning -- the Gorongosa National Park exhibit!
Mayor Dave Bieter, members of the Boise City Council, Parks and Recreation, and the Friends of Zoo Boise and staff all gathered for the event.
Zoo Boise Director Gene Peacock says he's only been the director for about a month and it's been quite the adventure so far.
"This exhibit it's the first new expansion in over a decade,” said Peacock. “We're going to grow the zoo by about 25 percent, so that's a big jump for a zoo to grow at one time, and we're excited to do it focusing on Gorongosa National Park and the work we do there."
Ground broken for new Gorongosa exhibit at Zoo Boise
Thanks to generous donors and community support Zoo Boise was able to raise more than $8.9 million for the "Zoo with a New View" campaign to make this vision a reality.
Construction is expected to wrap up in the summer of 2019. The zoo will remain open during construction.
