BOISE, Idaho — Ginny, a spotted-necked otter who has called Zoo Boise home for years, has died. Officials with the zoo announced her death with "heavy hearts" on social media Friday afternoon.

Officials said she outlived the average lifespan of her species, which is eight to 14 years in human captivity, by living up to 17 years old.

"Ginny was a remarkable ambassador for her wild counterparts, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for conservation and bringing joy to millions of guests who watched her swim, play, and eat," Zoo Boise said on Friday.

According to Zoo Boise's website, spotted-necked otters get their name from the white dotted pattern on their necks. They are also considered a near-threatened species.
