Tim Duncan has opted into his $5.6 million contract for the 2016-17 season, according to multiple reports, which means — if he doesn't retire — he'll play the next chapter of his legendary career in the only place he knows: San Antonio.
Surprised?
Duncan had the option to explore the free agency market this summer, but as a lifelong Spur, that was never a legitimate possibility. At 40 years old, he averaged career-lows across the board last season (8.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 25.2 minutes), but still managed to be effective on the defensive end.
The news of Duncan's decision to stay with the Spurs was first reported by The Vertical and ESPN.
