Nurse was helping victim when she was fatally shot during Arkansas grocery store shooting

Callie Weems, who worked as a nurse, was helping a gunshot victim by rendering aid when she was fatally shot by the gunman in Fordyce, Arkansas.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — As we learn more about what happened during the deadly mass shooting at a grocery store in Fordyce, we are hearing the stories of those who risked their lives to help others in the chaos.

One of those people that stepped up to help at the Mad Butcher that day was Callie Weems. She was a 23-year-old nurse who was a mother to Ivy, her 10-month-old daughter.

Arkansas State Police Director Mike Hagar said in a press conference Sunday that Weems used her training as a nurse to begin helping a victim that was shot by the gunman.

"Instead of fleeing from the obvious dangers, Callie Weems began using her training as a nurse to render aid to a gunshot victim," Hagar said.

Weems unfortunately would lose her life, as she was shot by the gunman while helping the other victim. A total of four people were killed on that tragic day along with ten more injured.

While Hagar noted Weems took the most "selfless actions" during the shooting, he described the gunman's actions as "the most cowardly pathetic actions imaginable as he was literally preying on defenseless victims."

Helen Browning, Weem's mother, shared memories of her daughter to the Associated Press. Browning recalled that an hour before the shooting, Weems was "marveling that her little girl let her sleep" until 9 a.m.

"I bet you feel like a new mom," Browning recalled.

Browning said she will raise Ivy and let her know that "her mother loved her" and that "she was the sunshine of momma's eyes."

The other three people killed by the gunman were identified as 63-year-old Shirley Taylor, 50-year-old Roy Sturgis, and 81-year-old Ellen Shrum.

We will update this article with more information as it becomes available.
