WASHINGTON — DirecTV says it has restored service on all of its satellite TV channels after a lengthy nationwide outage.
"Following a space event, our team of engineers and rocket scientists repositioned the satellite and have successfully restored all channels," the company said Wednesday on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Customers flooded DownDetector, a website that tracks outage reports submitted by users, with complaints about server connection early Tuesday.
Reports peaked Tuesday evening, with 1,353 reports, and continued to flood in through Wednesday morning. according to Down Detector.
DirecTV confirmed the connection issues on X and said multiple customers were "experiencing error code 771 on multiple local and national channels."
Hours later, the company revealed the cause of the outage.
"Some satellite customers are temporarily unable to watch HD channels because of a satellite positioning issue," DirecTV explained. "We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate our customers’ patience while we work to bring the satellite back online. "
"In the meantime, satellite customers can watch their programming through the DIRECTV app on mobile devices and connected TVs, or by activating SignalSaver via an internet connection on a capable set-top box," the statement continued.
The nationwide outage came nearly a week after cellphone network provider AT&T had a widespread outage that lasted for hours. It knocked out cellphone service for thousands of its users across the U.S. starting early Thursday before it was restored.
AT&T blamed the incident on an error in coding, without elaborating, and said it was not the result of a cyberattack.
The Dallas-based company said on its website that customers will get the $5 credit on their account within two billing cycles. The credit does not apply to AT&T Business, prepaid service or Cricket, its low-cost wireless service.
