Frozen waffles sold at Walmart, Target, Aldi recalled over listeria risk

The nationwide recall includes more than 500 types of frozen waffles sold at Target, Walmart and other grocery chains.

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of frozen waffles products sold at Walmart, Target and other major grocery stores in the U.S. are under recall because they could be contaminated with listeria.

TreeHouse Foods announced a voluntary recall of more than 500 varieties of frozen waffles on Friday. The Illinois-based manufacturer said that it discovered the issue after routine testing at the facility.

No confirmed reports of illness have been linked to the recall, according to the announcement.

The recalled waffles are sold under a variety of names including Walmart’s Great Value, Target’s Good & Gather and private label brands sold by Food Lion, Kroger and Schnucks. It also produces waffles for brands like Kodiak Cakes, Simple Truth and Foodhold.

Consumers can identify the recalled products, which were distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada, by checking the UPC code on the back of the carton as well as the lot code and the best buy date. The Food and Drug Administration also released a full list of the affected products.

Anyone with the affected items is advised to throw the frozen waffles away or to return to the place of purchase for credit.

The announcement comes on the heels of a massive recall for nearly 12 million pounds of meat and poultry products due to listeria concerns.

Listeria is especially dangerous for the elderly, people who are pregnant, and those with compromised immune systems.

People who do not fall into these groups are unlikely to get very sick from listeria bacteria, according to the CDC. Most experience food poisoning symptoms and recover without treatment.

People who are pregnant usually experience only fever, fatigue and muscle aches, the CDC says, but the illness can cause pregnancy loss or premature birth, and can cause serious illness or death in newborns.

Symptoms for people who are not pregnant include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever and muscle aches.

The CDC estimates that 1,600 people are infected with listeria each year in the United States and 260 die.
