12-year-old injured in bull riding event at Texas church, police say

Crews assessed the child and then requested a Care Flight to take the child to Children's Hospital in Dallas.

WAXAHACHIE, Texas — A 12-year-old child was injured in a bull riding event at a Waxahachie church Thursday night, police said.

The incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. at the Cowboy Church of Ellis County off U.S. 287 in Waxahachie, according to a police news release.

Police said dispatchers were told that the injured child fell off a bull. Waxahachie Fire and Rescue crews assessed the child and then requested a Care Flight to take the child to Children's Hospital in Dallas. The church told WFAA on Friday that the boy was in "very stable condition" and his injuries are not life threatening. A church spokesperson told WFAA the boy's injuries were a result of the fall off of the animal.

Cowboy Church of Ellis County offers weekly bull riding for all ages as part of its Thursday night "Buckout" ministry, according to its website

"All livestock is age appropriate, so whether an expert in need of practice, a beginner wanting to learn, or just a spectator, everyone is welcome," the website says. "Because the Cowboy Church is about relationships with Jesus Christ and our fellow man, there will be a gospel message at half time."
