State randomly chooses 8 counties for May election audit, begins recount

The Secretary of State's Office gathered in the capital and randomly selected the counties to ensure voting accuracy and transparency.

BOISE, Idaho — Election season is wrapping up. The Secretary of State's Office gathered in the capital on Tuesday, May 28, to ensure voting accuracy.

The State Board of Canvassers randomly drew names for eight counties and their precincts that the state will hand count votes for from this year's primary election.

2024 is the second election cycle to go through this random selection. The first was in 2022 under Secretary Denny after the governor signed Senate Bill 1274 into law, creating a post-election audit for each primary and general election.

"The purpose really is to build confidence in our elections process," Secretary Phil McGrane told KTVB. "Not only do we have the results that were reported by the counties on election night, but all those have been canvassed and shared at the county level. Now, as a state, we're going through and just double-checking the work just to really reassure voters that every vote counts. And all of our results are accurate."

On Tuesday, Bannock County, Boundary County, Canyon County, Cassia County, Fremont County, Madison County, Payette County and Valley County were selected.

Over the next week, the State Board of Canvasser's Office will send out teams to hand-count ballots in each of the selected counties and precincts.

"Comparing the results that the county reported to us as part of their canvass against what our auditors find, at the end of that process," McGrane said.

Then, the state will post their results for the public to see.

"This is all about transparency and really just building voter confidence in the process," McGrane said.

With hesitancy over the past four years, this is a step the state is taking to show fair elections and fair equipment are being used, McGrane said.
