ID=74774540CLAYTON, Idaho - With a grand total of two votes, Wendi McKnight has been elected as mayor of the second smallest city in the state.

With an official population of seven from the 2000 census, Clayton actually has 16 registered voters. And a majority of them - nine people - turned out at the polls to elect a mayor and three city council members.

All of the races were write-in only.

McKnight, who is the local bar owner and the interim mayor, got two votes, according to Custer County's unofficial results. Lisa Jackson got two votes for city council, while Beverly Smith and Frank D. Smith got nine votes each.

When KTVB's Brian Holmes visited Clayton last week, folks he spoke with were reluctant candidates, but they said the election was an important one, because if they didn't elect someone, the county would take over.

"It is a very big deal, you betcha," said City Clerk Bill Odom. "This is a funky little town that we are trying to keep alive."
