Idaho Voter Guide: What's on your ballot Tuesday?
Your guide to what's on the ballot on November 5.
The 2024 general election in Idaho on November 5 is about more than the highest office in the United States, although that race will likely dominate news feeds for days, weeks or even months.
Two statewide ballot issues, both of Idaho's representatives to the U.S. House, the entire Idaho Legislature, county offices and dozens of funding proposals are on the ballot in the Gem State.
To see candidates for a particular race, go to the chapter bar at the top of this story, scroll sideways to find the one you're interested in, and select that chapter link. Candidates are listed in alphabetical order.
A major change this year comes after the Idaho Legislature changed election law in 2023 to remove the March election day for school districts.
The 2024 Idaho Legislature voted to remove the August election date this past session as well.
In previous years, school districts had typically used March and August election days rather than the dates in May and November.
That means there are races and issues on the ballot this year that Idahoans might not be used to seeing in November.
Reminder: Taxing districts, such as schools and fire protection districts, can contain residents in multiple counties.
Only contested races are listed below.
Getting ready to vote Registration, absentee ballots, finding your polling place
Here's what you need to know if you plan to vote in the election. Links are from the Idaho Secretary of State's official voter information website.
First things first: Registration
- In order to register to vote in Idaho, you must meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- United States Citizen
- Resident of Idaho for at least 30 days before Election Day (Nov. 5)
- People who have been convicted of a felony who have completed the terms of their sentence
- You may register on the day of the election (Nov. 5) at your polling place. Find your polling place here. You will need photo ID and proof of your address, such as a utility bill or lease agreement.
- Not sure if you're registered, but might be? Find out at this link.
Voting by absentee ballot
- October 25 is the deadline to request an absentee ballot.
- Voted absentee ballots must be received by the county clerk by 8 p.m. November 5.
- In-person early voting must begin by October 21 in the counties that offer it and ends at 5 p.m. on November 1. Early voting is held at a central location, such as the county elections office. Some counties start early voting sooner than October 21, such as Ada County, which starts on October 15. A county-by-county breakdown is available here.
It's Election Day, where do I go? What else do I need to know?
- Polling locations may have changed since the last election. Find your polling place here.
- Voters are required to present photo ID. A registered voter who does not have photo ID may instead sign a Personal Identification Affidavit, which is a sworn statement of identity.
- If you've moved recently, but more than 30 days before the election, and haven't updated your voter registration information, bring proof of your new address to the polling place associated with your new address and update your information when you check in.
- If you've moved less than 30 days before the election, and are eligible to vote, go to the polling place associated with your old address.
- Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 5.
