YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — Five people are hospitalized after the driver of a vehicle accidentally crashed into a thermal geyser at Yellowstone National Park.
Yellowstone National Park said the accident happened around 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, after the driver accidentally drove into the Semi-Centennial Geyser near Roaring Mountian, between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction.
The five people inside the vehicle got out on their own and were taken to the hospital for "non-life-threatening injuries." The park said the geyser's water is acidic, with roughly 105 degrees Fahrenheit surface temperatures.
Yellowstone officials said that on Friday afternoon, rangers closed the road for nearly two hours to allow crews to safely lift the car out of the geyser, which was submerged in nine feet of water.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Park officials have not released the names of those involved.
