BOISE, Idaho — A resident of a homeless camp in Malheur County is dead after police found him with gunshot wounds Tuesday, Jan. 16.
The Malheur County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that dispatch received a call around 3:40 p.m. reporting multiple gunshots at 1187 NW 22nd Ave. in Ontario, Oregon. The area is a homeless camp called "The Flats."
The office said deputies arrived around 3:46 p.m. and found a man, Daniel Mendoza Olvera, 40, with multiple gunshot wounds. After three minutes, the area was deemed safe. He was given medical attention, but he died at the scene.
Police said they are investigating the incident as a homicide, but there is no threat to the public.
Multiple law enforcement officials will be working on the investigation: The Malheur County Crimes team, the Malheur County Sheriff's Office, the High Desert Drug Task Force, the Ontario Police and the Oregon State Police.
