YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — One person is dead and a law enforcement park ranger is in the hospital following a shooting at Yellowstone National Park. Officials said the incident occurred late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
According to Yellowstone National Park, rangers responded to a report of an individual with a firearm making threats. Upon responding and making contact with the person making threats, there was an "exchange of gunfire" between rangers and the person.
The person died from their injuries in the shootout, which occurred at Canyon Village, in the central part of Yellowstone National Park. Thursday's news release said the park is not releasing the identity of the individual at this time.
The injured ranger was taken to an area hospital, where they are in stable condition.
Yellowstone National Park has closed the area around the Canyon Lodge complex for an investigation to occur.
The FBI is leading the investigation, receiving support from National Park Service special agents. No additional information has been released.
