Snow on Cascade passes making holiday travel difficult

It's a good idea to check pass conditions before you hit the road.

As of 9 p.m. Thursday, traction tires are advised on Blewett, Stevens, and White passes.

The roadway is bare and dry on Snoqualmie Pass, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Washington State Patrol recommends keeping an emergency kit in your car, checking the tread on tires, and leaving enough room to stop when driving in slick conditions.

Trooper Rick Johnson also warned drivers not to get over-confident just because you have four-wheel drive.

The problem is ice doesn’t care how many wheel drive you have, and slippery roads, you can’t stop any faster,” Johnson said.

He said the advice may seem repetitive, but worth taking to heart.

“And we want to repeat it every year because we still end up getting people that aren’t prepared, and collisions that could have been avoided.”

Now is a good time to winterize your home as temperatures drop. To prevent pipes from bursting, plumbers recommend keeping water moving through pipes, covering vents in crawl spaces, disconnecting hoses and shutting off the water supply to outdoor hoses, and adding foam insulation.
