Wrongfully released Idaho inmate apprehended by police in Washington

46-year-old Daniel J. Billingsley was mistakenly released from the Kootenai County Jail on May 20, 2024. He was not considered a threat to the community.

BOISE, Idaho — After an eight day search, an Idaho inmate has been apprehended by a flurry of law enforcement agencies in the Seattle area. 

46-year-old Daniel J. Billingsley was mistakenly released from the Kootenai County Jail on May 20, leading law enforcement on an week long search. Billingsley was later taken into police custody without incident after being located on Vashon Island, Washington. He is currently being held in King County Jail, waiting to be transported back to Idaho. 

According to a news release from King County, the circumstances leading up to Billingsley's release are being investigated internally.

Billingsley was previously sentenced to the Idaho Department of Correction and had been taken to Kootenai County to face local Fish and Game charges. He is currently being held on a possession of controlled substance charge. 

Billingsley has a 15+ year long criminal history in Kootenai County, according to the news release. 

The apprehension of this person was done with assistance from Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, United States Marshal's Service, King County Sheriff's Office, Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, Seattle Police Department, the Washington State Department of Corrections and the Idaho State Department of Correction.
