BOISE, Idaho — City officials say they expect to have the historic Gene Harris Bandshell in Julia Davis Park refurbished by the end of summer, just in time for the city’s 50th anniversary celebration of the Boise River Greenbelt on Sept. 19-21.

A fire last April badly damaged the bandshell’s roof and walls. Since then, the Boise Parks and Recreation Department has been working hard to restore the structure.

They have been working with structural engineers to clean-up and secure the facility that hosts more than a dozen community events each year.

“Our team understands the importance of preserving the historic details of the bandshell and will work with contractors to preserve this important structure’s character and charm,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. “For example, the tiles saved from the bandshell’s roof will be used in repairing the structure.”

The city is working on a plan to improve the bandshell for use by future generations.

The restoration plan includes building a green room, upgrading restrooms, improvement to A/V equipment including LED lights for the stage and new controls boards to manage sound at event. Total cost of the repairs and upgrades is estimated at around $430,000. It is covered by insurance.

The city also wants to add a shade structure to enhance the experience of attending events at the bandshell. The cost of the canopy and other amenities is estimated at around $400,000. Site improvements include an accessible viewing area.

The Boise Parks and Recreation team is finalizing its bid based on the architect’s restoration plan. Construction will begin shortly after the bid is awarded.

A free concert is planned at the bandshell on Friday, Sept. 20, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary Greenbelt celebration.
