BOISE, Idaho — A never-before-seen video was played before a jury Monday showing murder suspect Chad Daybell speaking with his daughter Emma while in the back of a patrol car, just moments after being detained. The third week of Daybell's trial kicked off with more testimony from three law enforcement officers.
In the video, as detectives searched his property for the remains of Lori Vallow's children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, Daybell can be heard telling his daughter about the search that was happening just yards away from where he sat in the back a Rexburg police car.
Emma appeared emotional in the video as the two discussed financial obligations while he was in police custody.
Wheeler testified that while law enforcement searched his property, Daybell went to Emma's house, kitty-corner to his, for up to an hour and a half.
Wheeler said Daybell was speeding when left his daughter's house, which he claimed was potentially indicative of guilt. After Daybell was pulled over and taken into custody, Emma walked over to the patrol vehicle where their conversation ensued.
In the patrol car video, Daybell could be seen looking over his right shoulder. Rexburg police detective Eric Wheeler testified that he was looking toward the fire pit on his property, near where Tylee's remains were later found.
The jury also saw a police officer's body camera video from the June 9, 2020, arrest, showing Daybell outside his car after being pulled over and informed that a body had been found on his property.
"He [the detective] told me that what they're looking at is...they found one body with probable cause and there's likely two," Emma said to her father in the video. "So, I asked, 'are you going to search the property forever until it's found' and he said, 'well no, but we're going to look.'"
Daybell is accused of murder and conspiracy in the deaths of his wife Lori Vallow Daybell's children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, as well as the death of his first wife, Tammy Daybell.
