BOISE, Idaho — Wednesday is day three of the Chad Daybell trial. On Tuesday, four jurors were selected from the one panel the court got through, before breaking in the afternoon for questionnaire review.
There are now 20 prospective jurors in the trial - four from Tuesday, and 16 from Monday.
The court must reach 50 prospective jurors so that each party, prosecution and defense, can each have 16 preemptory challenges. After the challenges, that will leave 18 jurors - 12 jurors and six alternates. All 18 jurors will be empaneled for the entire trial. The alternates will find out they are alternates closer to deliberation.
Wednesday's goal is to get through as many panels of jurors as possible. The court has roughly two weeks to complete jury selection to stay on track with the proposed timeline of the trial.
Attached to this trial is the death penalty, making the court work a bit more diligently to find the appropriate jury pool. Another challenge with this case is the length of trial, lasting an estimated eight to ten weeks.
