BOISE, Idaho — With Chad Daybell's trial right around the corner, Lori Vallow Daybell's family are trying to emotionally prepare.
"We are mostly trying to gear up for an onslaught of emotions," her uncle Rex Conner said. "New information will come out we hope but with that new information, there's of course the emotional. I'll say devastation that comes with it as it was a first round."
Jury selection starts on Monday. An Ada County administrative judge expects the trial to last 8 to 10 weeks, longer than Lori's trial, because the death penalty is on the table.
If Chad is found guilty, the roughly two-week penalty phase would start right after the verdict. He faces three counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy in the deaths of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and two of Lori's children.
Lori was found guilty on all charges related to their deaths last spring after almost seven hours of jury deliberation.
Rex, who lives in Utah, said he plans on traveling to Boise a couple of times for Chad's trial. He is "not interested in seeing Chad" but wants to express his gratitude to several people.
"It was a real eye opener when I went to Lori's trial," he said. "I was going just to support my daughters who wanted to go. But that's where it dawned on me for the first time how many people are involved in finding justice for Tylee and JJ and Tammy. Boise or the trial has all the people that I need to thank again."
Adam Cox, Lori's brother, does not plan on following along. He recently moved to Arizona.
"Our family was just smashed to pieces because of all of Lori's lies," he said. "It's really painful for me to just sit and watch. So, I choose not to do that."
Adam said he wants truth and justice to come out of the trial. Rex wants more answers, although he knows some will go unanswered forever.
"To me, it doesn't matter if [Chad] gets a life sentence or if he gets a death penalty," Adam said, "because he's going to be in jail for a really long time."
The two are still producing their podcast, "Tylee and JJ’s Silver Linings," which they started a few months after Lori's guilty verdict. While they originally planned on 10 episodes, they have now released more than 30.
Adam said they frequently bring people who have experienced trauma on as special guests to help them open up and work through the healing process.
The audio version of their book, "Lori's Lies and Family Ties: Healing from the Tylee and J.J. Tragedy," was released last month. They pushed back on rhetoric claiming they are capitalizing on the situation.
"We're okay with what people say," Rex said. "We know what we're in it for. Adam and I know what it's doing for us as far as our healing and being able to process."
