MOSCOW, Idaho — The Latah County Prosecutor is asking the court to schedule Bryan Kohberger's jury trial during the summer of 2024.
Kohberger, a former PhD student at Washington State University, is accused of murdering Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves in their off-campus home near the University of Idaho on Nov. 13, 2022.
In court documents filed Thursday, the state is asking for a six-week trial to happen next summer. It is also asking that the trial dates avoid times when Moscow High School and other schools in the area are in session.
Moscow High School is located right next to the Latah County Courthouse. The state says the case has already strained available parking, as well as the safety of students and pedestrians. The state said it also is aware that lodging may be difficult to find should the trial take place when school is in session.
The state is asking for the court to begin at 8:30 a.m. each day and end by 3 p.m. to give jurors time to "tend to their personal affairs." It also said by having more time in the afternoon, the parties will have more time to prepare and address any motions or other matters that typically happen during jury trials.
The state is also asking to schedule a status conference to schedule the trial.
In May, Kohberger stood silent as Judge John C. Judge asked him to enter a plea. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
Kohberger's trial was scheduled to take place in October 2023, but in August, he waived his right to a speedy trial.
