BOISE -- After rain and near freezing conditions blanketed the Treasure Valley, car crashes plagued roads.

Westbound Interstate 84 was closed at Ontario until the early hours of Tuesday morning due to a multi-vehicle crash blocking the freeway.

The interstate has since been reopened.

It was shut down 30 miles west of Ontario and 4 miles west of Huntington after a fatal semi-truck rollover on the Lime Bridge, according to Oregon State Police. Hazardous conditions are being reported near that area.

Oregon State Police responded to the crash at about 6 p.m. A semi-truck and box type 53-foot trailer were going westbound on I-84 near milepost 342 taking a curve, when the driver lost control on the icy roadway.

The semi slid off the road into the median, then went over an embankment and into a guardrail. The driver of the truck, 62-year-old David W. Herring of Yakima, Wash., was killed.

After the rollover, the semi was hit by two other vehicles: a passenger vehicle and small box-type truck that were unable to avoid the trailer. The occupants of both of those vehicles were taken to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Baker City. No significant injuries were reported.

OSP was assisted by the Huntington Volunteer Fire department, Oregon Department of Transportation, and Washington State Patrol.

The crash blocked the freeway for several hours.

According to Ada County Dispatch, 23 crashes were reported since 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Canyon County Sheriff's Office also reported 23 crashes and said there were "not as many as expected."
