Through donations, Lake Hazel Middle School students thrive

Students can get basic necessities at The Cherokee Closet.

BOISE, Idaho — Two Lake Hazel Middle School employees have created a place where students in need of basic items like clean clothes and toiletries can go without judgment.

The school's resource officer and counselor say they got the idea after noticing several students didn't have regular access to basic necessities like jackets, socks, shoes, or toiletries.

They found an empty storage closet and created "The Cherokee Closet" — named after the school's mascot.

Once it was set up, they quietly approached students in need and made arrangements for them to shop at the closet during times when other students weren't really paying attention.

They say their school doesn't look like an obvious place where such a project is needed, but add they've had a great response.
