EUGENE -- The 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships continued Thursday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Fields.
Boise State senior Emma Bates, the defending champion in the 10,000 meters, hoped to become the fifth woman ever to defend the title.
Bates looked comfortable early, holding steady at the front of the pack for most of the race.
However, with just a few laps remaining, Bates began to fade, ultimately finishing with a time of 33:50, well off her personal best.
Bates finished 10th overall and earned second-team All-American honors.
Fellow senior Marisa Howard also competed on Thursday, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
Howard, the Mountain West champion, finished fourth in her semi-final heat with a time of 9:45.25 and will compete for the National title on Saturday.
