LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Another day, another record-setting performance from Raimee Sherle and the Boise State women’s soccer team.
Off to their best start (5-2-0) since 2004, the Broncos headed into the second half of their non-conference road trip against New Mexico State looking to forget Friday night’s 2-0 loss to Arizona.
Junior forward Sherle, a 2016 Rocky Mountain High School grad, gave the Broncos the lead in the 23rd minute after finding the back of the net off a pass from McKenna Kynett.
The Broncos would hold onto that lead until the 72nd minute when the Aggies were able to slip the ball past goalkeeper Tara Fisher.
Just six minutes later, Sherle beat an Aggie defender on a breakaway, forcing the New Mexico State goalkeeper to come out of the box to cut off her angle, but it wouldn't be enough.
With one minute remaining in regulation, the Aggies score off a free kick at the top of the box, sending the game into overtime.
Scoreless after one overtime, freshman Piper Flannery took the ball down the right side in the 106th minute, sending a cross to Sherle, who beats her defender, turns and scores, giving Boise State their fifth win of the season.
Sherle now has 33 career goals (eight this season) and is just two goals away from the individual record held by Shannon Saxton (35, 2007-2010).
Sunday's hat trick by Sherle is the third of her career, breaking the old record held by Saxton (2). She has also tied the program for multi-goal games (7).
The Broncos will host Idaho State Sunday, September 16 to close out their nonconference schedule.
