Prep preview: Borah bringing back veteran squad this season

"We can do pretty much anything, obviously you saw from last year, we are pretty good," said Borah senior WR Ellis Magnuson.

BOISE — "We can do pretty much anything, obviously you saw from last year, we are pretty good," said Borah senior WR Ellis Magnuson.

Pretty good might be an understatement. Fresh off their third playoff appearance in a row, Borah is looking for more this fall.

"I mean I think we could go all the way, we are pretty good," said senior QB Jake Standlee.

The Lions knocked off perennial power Rocky Mountain last year, a win they hope further proves they belong with the 5A SIC's elite programs.

"They are one of the top schools in Idaho, so it was exciting to beat them and know that we are right there with them," said Magnuson.

"I think it set a standard for that season and seasons to come," said senior linebacker Jacob Batubenga.

It all starts under center with returning three-year starting gunslinger Jake Standlee

"Jake has that it-factor," said Borah head coach Jason Burton.

"He's special, he can throw the ball really well, he's really good at making reads, he's been working all summer getting better," said Magnuson.

No shortage of weapons for Standlee, although his go-to target is playmaking wideout and safety Ellis Magnuson, one of the top football players in the entire state.

"I mean he's just so athletic, you go and give him the ball and he'll make everyone on the team miss, it's crazy," said Standlee.

If Magnuson is doubled, Standlee can rely on veteran perimeter weapons in matchup nightmare 6-foot four target Austin Bolt.

"He's six foot four and he's super fast, I mean he's probably as fast as Ellis," said Standlee.

If those two are covered, you also have speedy slot playmaker Chase Nett.

Defensively the key for Borah is a heavy emphasis on turnovers, a category the lions led the SIC in last fall.

"I mean we led the SIC in turnovers last year, and that's what we are working towards doing again this year, that' one of our big goals," said Batubenga.

With momentum and so much experience back from a playoff team last season, the Lions believe this fall could be special.

"It is really special, when you look back and realize we have 15 guys that are returning, most of them seniors, most of them three-year starters," said Burton.

"Obviously at the end of the day, we are working for a championship...we feel like we have the pieces to do that, absolutely," said Magnuson.
