BOISE, Idaho — Boise High standout Avery Howell added yet another accolade this week before departing the City of Trees to start her collegiate career at USC.
For the second-straight year, Howell was named the Gatorade Idaho Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The senior averaged 21.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.9 steals per game to lead the Brave to a 24-2 overall record and third-place finish at the state tournament.
The 6-foot forward became the second girl from Idaho in history to earn a spot in the McDonald's All American Game. Howell is set to compete with 24 of the best in the country on April 2 at the Toyota Center in Houston on ESPN2.
Howell is a five-star recruit, ranked as the nation's No. 23 prospect in the class of 2024 by ESPN. After helping Boise win its third district title in a row, Howell was named the 5A Southern Idaho Conference Player of the Year.
She received offers from many powerhouse programs prior to signing her national letter of intent to play at USC, with a top-five list featuring the Trojans, Duke, Indiana, Utah and Washington.
“I just think she’s a complete player,” Rocky Mountain head coach BJ Humphreys said in a news release. “Howell is a [great] rebounder, defender, passer and playmaker.”
Howell is the fourth Boise girls basketball player to receive Gatorade Idaho Player of the Year honors, joining Peyton McFarland (2019-2020), Jackie Luna-Castro (2010-2011) and Maggie Burkett (2005-2006).
The Brave raised more than $10,800 for breast cancer research this year through their Pink Zone Game. Thursday's news release said Howell has volunteered with Boise High School's Parent/Daughter Clinic and helped with local summer basketball camps as a counselor.
