Boise State women's volleyball forfeits match with San Jose State

Idaho Gov. Brad Little in a statement said Boise State is "working within the spirit" of the Defending Women's Sports Act Executive Order he signed in March.

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State women's volleyball has forfeited its match at San Jose State scheduled for Saturday, the athletic department announced Friday afternoon.

The match is recorded as a 3-0 loss for the Broncos. Boise State Athletics released a brief statement announcing the forfeit, but is not offering further comment.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little shared the statement on social media, adding "I applaud (Boise State) for working with the spirit of my Executive Order, the Defending Women's Sports Act."

Little signed the order opposing Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ athletes in March. He was joined by female sports advocate Riley Gaines, student-athletes and others outside the Idaho State Capitol.

"We need to ensure player safety for all of our female athletes and continue the fight for fairness in women’s sports," Little said Friday.

San Jose State's volleyball team has a transgender athlete on the their roster. Recently, there has been an effort to encourage schools scheduled to play San Jose State to cancel those matchups.

At least one other school, Southern Utah University, has canceled a scheduled match against the Spartans. Other schools have announced they will continue to keep their match on their schedule.

Boise State Athletics has not elaborated on the reason the match was canceled and forfeit.

The school also has not said who made the decision to cancel the match or if the team itself was involved in the decision.
