MOSCOW, Idaho — Idaho head football coach Jason Eck is leaving the school to take the head coaching job at the University of New Mexico, replacing the recently departed Bronco Mendenhall.
Eck is receiving a five-year contract to become the next Lobos’ head coach.
Eck had a tremendous tenure in his three seasons in Moscow, going 26-13 at his first head coaching gig.
He turned around a program that had not had a winning season in five years prior to his arrival at Idaho.
This season, despite a team ravaged by injuries, the Vandals went 10-4 and only lost to top-ranked Oregon by 10 points in week one of the season.
In his tenure in Moscow, Eck beat both Montana and Montana State and took the Vandals to the FCS quarterfinals in back-to-back seasons.
Eck takes over a New Mexico program, which went 5-7 and defeated Washington State in Mendenhall’s one year in charge of the program.
Eck’s tenure at New Mexico will begin with a matchup in Ann Arbor against Michigan on August 30 before facing his Potato State trophy nemesis, Idaho State on September 6.
This is a developing story. The KREM 2 team will update as details become available.
