Boise State looks to keep the good times rolling in pursuit of a College Football Playoff bid as it opens Mountain West play Saturday night against Utah State.
The hype surrounding the Broncos and Heisman hopeful Ashton Jeanty continues to skyrocket ahead of the Aggies' trip to The Blue. No. 21 Boise State jumped four spots in the Associated Press Top 25 poll earlier this week, its highest ranking since November 2020.
Jeanty rushed for 249 yards and four scores in last week's 45-24 win over Washington State in front of the largest crowd in Albertsons Stadium history. The junior running back eyes another elite performance against Utah State, the nation's 114th-ranked run defense.
"The more you win, rankings and all this, the target just becomes even bigger," Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson said. "That's why my message to our team is going to be, 'we are always the hunter here.' That's easy to talk about, but what I mean by that is how we work and how we prep. We are on the attack, we attack success. We're not afraid of failure."
Boise State enters Saturday's showdown at Albertsons Stadium riding eight-straight wins over Utah State, dating back to October 2015. The Aggies look to end the streak, snap this season's three-game skid and upend the homecoming celebration in the City of Trees.
The Mountain West opener marks Nate Dreiling's first trip to Boise as Utah State's interim head coach. Dreiling, who had been the Aggies' defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach, was elevated on July 2 after the university announced the firing of Blake Anderson.
"Being thrown into the situation he was over the summertime, met him in person for the first time at some of these meetings, and I know what he's going through," Danielson said. "I went through it last season and I think he's doing a great job with his team. I mean they played two top 10, top 15 teams in the first four games. They had Utah on the ropes … They're playing good football. I know he's doing the defense, being the head coach. He's got good coaches around and he's got really good players too."
Dreiling is tasked with slowing a red-hot Boise State offense, spearheaded by Jeanty and a physical front five. The Broncos rank in the top 10 among FBS programs in rushing offense, scoring offense, total offense, sacks allowed, third-down conversion rate and red zone offense.
The Maddux Madsen-led unit is not alone in its top-10 statistics. Washington State had allowed five sacks in four games before Boise State recorded eight resulting in 71 lost yards. The Broncos' 21 total sacks and 5.25 sacks per game lead the nation through the first five weeks of the season.
Utah State graduate quarterback Spencer Petras returned from an injury on Sept. 21 against Temple, going 26-of-44 for a career-high 293 yards and two touchdowns in the 45-29 loss. The Aggies had extra time to prepare for The Blue on a bye last weekend.
Safety Ty Benefield looks to continue his tear after recording Boise State's first interception, stopping a Washington State drive in the end zone at the end of the first half. Benefield has a team-high 29 total tackles this fall and ranks second with 3.5 tackles for loss, behind Ahmed Hassanein (4.5).
Hassanein has been dominant up front for the Broncos, also leading the team with a quartet of sacks through four games. The standout defensive end recorded a career-high eight tackles against the Cougars and added two sacks.
Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT Saturday, Oct. 5 on Fox Sports 2. Information on how to watch the contest is included in this article. The showdown is the third of three sell-out crowds at Albertsons Stadium this fall.
