BOISE, Idaho — One of the most explosive offensive players on the Boise State football team is leaving the program with three games left in the regular season.
Multiple sources told KTVB that sophomore wide receiver Eric McAlister made the decision to transfer late Sunday night. Head coach Andy Avalos then confirmed McAlister is no longer with the program on Monday morning:
"Eric McAlister has chosen to no longer compete as a member of our program. We wish him the best in the future and our focus remains on our next game," Avalos said in a statement released through the team's spokesperson.
McAlister leads Boise State in every significant receiving category this season, including targets (90), catches (47), yards (847) and touchdowns (5). He also had five games with 90-or-more receiving yards through the first nine games. No other wide receiver on the roster has one such performance this fall.
McAlister is coming off an 8-catch, 85-yard performance in a 37-30 loss to Fresno State where he was targeted 19 times in what turned out to be his final game as a Bronco.
"He's a playmaker," freshman quarterback Maddux Madsen said after the game, "[we threw] a lot of targets to him. It's going to happen. He'll make plays."
McAlister is only a sophomore with two years of eligibility remaining. The Texas-native can enter the transfer portal when it opens on December 4, and sources says he already has Power 5 options.
True freshman Prince Strachan was listed behind McAlister on the most recent depth chart. The 6-foot-5 wide receiver has only played a total of 94 snaps this season. He had 4 catches on 9 targets for 63 yards and a touchdown.
