BOISE, Idaho — Stacy Collins is expected to leave Penn State to join the Boise State coaching staff under Spencer Danielson, as reported Friday by ESPN and confirmed by KTVB Sports Director Jay Tust. Danielson made the addition official Monday afternoon.
Collins will serve as the Broncos' assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and coach inside linebackers. The move finalizes Boise State's somewhat new-look coaching staff for the 2024 season.
The Oregon native was the special teams coordinator and EDGE coach for the Broncos in 2021 and has 25 years of college football coaching experience. He's been a target for Boise State for weeks, but it didn't come to fruition until recently.
Boise State signed Collins to a two-year deal worth $350,000 annually. He also gets a $15,000 signing bonus and an additional $15,000 for moving expenses.
Collins joined the Nittany Lions as special teams coordinator, outside linebackers and nickels coach in 2022. Collins helped Penn State's Chris Stoll win the Patrick Mannelly Award, presented annually to the nation's top long snapper.
He coached at Utah State prior to Boise State, starting as special teams coordinator (2016) and making his way to co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach (2020). He also coached running backs and inside linebackers during his time with the Aggies.
"My family and I are so excited to get back to Boise State and the Treasure Valley," Collins said. "We know how special of a place it is and what can be achieved there, which is why I'm proud to Bleed Blue! I am really looking forward to continuing building off the momentum from last season. It is an honor to be able to work under the leadership of Spencer Danielson and Jeremiah Dickey. I am so fortunate to have maintained relationships with players and staff on the team from my time there and I cannot wait to get back to work with them."
The Broncos' specialists thrived in the lone season under Collins, tied for seventh nationally with three blocked punts and ranking ninth in the country by blocking four kicks. More of Boise State's special teams stats against FBS opponents in 2021 are shown in Tust's post below:
Boise State will field one of the nation's best kicker-punter duos in 2024 in Jonah Dalmas and James Ferguson-Reynolds. Dalmas – the program's leader in career field goals made (80) and field goal percentage (88.9%) – announced his return for one last ride as a Bronco earlier this month.
Danielson quickly filled out his staff following his promotion to head coach – minus a linebackers coach to take over the position he previously coached and a special teams coach – both filled by Collins. Danielson brought back Demario Warren for a third season as the Broncos' cornerbacks coach, but he is no longer coaching special teams.
"To have someone with the level of expertise and experience as Stacy Collins want to come back to Boise State is truly a blessing," Danielson said. "Stacy is one of the best special teams coaches that I have ever come across and an elite linebackers coach. He does an amazing job of developing young men on and off the field and the amount that he cares about his players is second to none. I'm incredibly excited to get to work with him again."
