Boise State hires former Ball State defensive coordinator Tyler Stockton

Stockton will serve as Boise State's co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach after spending the past five seasons at Ball State.

BOISE, Idaho — Only one open spot remains on the Boise State football coaching staff after head coach Spencer Danielson on Thursday announced the addition of Tyler Stockton.

Stockton played for Notre Dame and spent the past five years as the defensive coordinator at Ball State. He joins the Broncos as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, replacing Kane Ioane, who accepted a role at Nevada earlier this month.

In each of the previous four seasons, Stockton has been a nominee for the Broyles Award, which is presented annually to the top assistant coach in college football. Stockton has also been named to ESPN's 45 minority coaches under the age of 45 list, and the American Football Coaches Association's 35 Under 35 list.

Two years ago, Stockton was promoted to assistant head coach at Ball State while also coaching inside linebackers and serving as the program's defensive coordinator. The Cardinals ranked 20th nationally in rush defense, 21st in total defense and 32nd in pass defense last fall.

"Tyler Stockton brings an impressive resume to Boise State, and I expect him to fit right in with our program," Danielson said. "His time as a player at Notre Dame and his experience coaching shows that he understands what is required to win championships and bowl games. I look forward to his imprint on our secondary as we continue to uphold the standard at Boise State."

Stockton will coach alongside Boise State's Erik Chinander, who was promoted to defensive coordinator on Dec. 14. Chinander the Bronco staff in December 2022 as the assistant head coach, defensive line coach and defensive run-game coordinator.

Danielson has also retained offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan, running backs coach James Montgomery, wide receivers coach Matt Miller, EDGE coach Jabril Frazier and offensive line coach Tim Keane. Danielson still needs to ink his next linebackers coach, a position he held before being promoted to head coach.

In his first season as defensive coordinator, Stockton helped lead Ball State to its first MAC Championship since 1996. The Cardinals also captured their first-ever win in a bowl game, knocking off Mountain West champion San Jose State in the Arizona Bowl.

Prior to Ball State, he spent three years at Western Illinois, starting as defensive line coach and run game coordinator. Stockton was promoted to defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2018.

"I am very excited to come to Boise State and join the special program that Spencer Danielson is building. He has an incredible vision for this program, one that will lead it to championships while teaching with love and care for the players," Stockton said. "Boise State's fans are the best in the country, and they impact games unlike any other school. My family and I are so excited to become a part of Bronco Nation and to not only join, but contribute, to this community. This is a wonderful opportunity as Coach Danielson and I share very similar visions for a program and how we can truly impact our student-athletes on and off the field."

Stockton is a two-time graduate of Notre Dame and was a member of the Fighting Irish football team for five years as a defensive lineman. He earned his bachelor's degree in 2013 and MBA in corporate finance in 2014.
