BOISE, Idaho — Two Idahoans and a Boise State University graduate are on the brink of representing the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics after three days of competition at the U.S. Olympic track & field trials.
Borah High School graduate Nathan Green is one of 12 athletes on the start list for the men's 1,500-meter final at 6:47 p.m. MT Monday. Green looks to punch his ticket to Paris live on NBC and Peacock after surviving the first round and semifinals.
The Boise native ran the race of his life in Saturday night's semifinal, posting a personal-record of 3:34.49, the fourth-fastest time of 25 competitors in the 1,500-meter semifinals in Eugene. The time is the third-fastest in NCAA history and a University of Washington all-time record.
The 2023 NCAA champion advanced to the semifinals by finishing in fourth place Friday night in the 1,500m first round with a time of 3:35.71. Green's run in Oregon comes after he finished in 10th place in the 1,500m at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Rexburg native Chari Hawkins currently sits in second place overall in the women's heptathlon with a season-best 5,560 points through six of seven events. The grand finale, the women's heptathlon 800-meter race is set for 7:37 p.m. MT Monday on NBC and Peacock.
Hawkins entered day two of the women's heptathlon in second place overall with 3,874 points, just 10 points behind leader Anna Hall. After finishing 11th in the long jump at 5.97 meters Monday morning, Hawkins took second in the javelin throw (49.28 meters).
The Madison High School graduate finished in the top three in three of four events on Sunday, including second place in the high jump (1.79 meters) and shot put (14.67 meters). Entering Monday night's 800-meter race, Hawkins is just six points back of Hall and 68 points ahead of third place Taliyah Brooks (5,492 points).
Boise State University graduate and 2022 NCAA champion Kristie Schoffield is one of nine athletes on the start list for the women's 800-meter final at 8:32 p.m. MT Monday. The New Hampshire native goes for a spot on Team USA live on NBC and Peacock.
Schoffield punched her ticket to Monday night's final with a season-best 2:00.64 in the semis Sunday night, good for sixth place. She grabbed the final qualifying spot for the 800-meter semifinals by finishing in 27th place in the opening round with a time of 2:02.64.
"I'm just really grateful. I'm just really happy and I'm really grateful and I'm really excited," an emotional Schoffield told KTVB's Jay Tust. "I've known it's there. That's how we've been training for the past month. I'm happy for it to come to fruition."
Four members of Team Idaho have already clinched a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Five athletes failed to qualify despite respectable performances at the University of Oregon during the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
Entering Monday, June 24, Team Idaho has 15 total Olympic hopefuls, with 10 of those athletes still competing in Eugene. For results, event times and the full list of athletes, visit the link below:
