How to protect peppergrass in Idaho

BLM is asking for public comment on ideas to protect the threatened species.

IDAHO, USA — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wants the public's opinion about protecting a threatened species. The slickspot peppergrass is a white flowering plant that grows amongst the sagebrush steppe.

"The BLM is committed to conserving slickspot peppergrass habitat through this proposed restoration plan. We expect to use a variety of methods to achieve these conservation objectives," said BLM Boise District Manager Tanya Thrift.

It is a native plant to Idaho and people might see it in foothill areas from western Treasure Valley spots to areas near Twin Falls. This plant helps pollinators in the area-- and it also serves another purpose.

Botanist Gillian Wigglesworth also said this plant is an indicator of the overall health of the surrounding environment. Right now it is threatened by invasive species and wildfires.

BLM wants to hear from people about how they should protect the peppergrass habitat.
For example, they may remove invasive species and reseed the native ones. Comments need to be submitted at the BLM National NEPA Register by Nov. 26. For more information people can go to the BLM website.
